Admissions

Parents interested in obtaining a place for their child at Stonesfield Primary School should contact the school and arrange a time to look around, meet the Headteacher and staff, and ask any questions they might have.

At Stonesfield, children begin school, for mornings only, in the September following their 4th birthday. Autumn born children (Sept. - Dec.) then start fulltime in January whilst all other children start full time after Easter

Parents of children starting school are invited to an induction meeting with the Headteacher in June and the class teacher makes a home visit to get to know the child and his/her parents before the child starts school.

The Foundation Stage  teacher makes regular visits to Stonesfield Pre-School to read stories and establish relationships with the pre-school children. The children are invited to come to school for a few mornings prior to their start to ensure that they have the smoothest possible start to their primary education.

The school’s admission number is 20 per year

Allocation of places

Applications for places are sent out by the LEA to all children in the September before children start. A closing date is given by the LEA (usually November) Applications received after this deadline will only be considered after all those received by the deadline. Applications must be made by completing the application form.

Applications for children in other age groups will be dealt with as they arise.  Please make enquiries at the school with regard to the availability of places.

In the case of over-subscription, children with a statement of Special Educational Needs who have Stonesfield Primary as the named school on their statement will receive first priority.  After this, places at the school are allocated according to the following criteria:

  1. Children from within the School’s catchment area.
  2. Siblings already in attendance at the School at the time of the proposed admission.
  3. Villages without primary schools.
  4. Other applicants who do not meet any of the above criteria.

All applications will be treated equally, irrespective of need or ability.

In the event of more applicants than places available within any individual criteria, the decision will be made according to distance from the home address to the school by the nearest walking route gate to gate.

Appeals

Any parent who has been refused a place for their child has a right to appeal to an independent appeal panel (except temporarily the parents of a child who has been permanently excluded from two schools, at least one within the last two years).  The parent should complete an appeal form and return it to the Chair of Governors by the date specified on the form.

In appropriate cases parents may wish to defer entry until the term after the child’s fifth birthday.  If this course of action were to be taken the school would expect some communication between the parents of the child, school staff and other relevant agencies. In this case the school will hold a place open for a child to a later date within that academic year, although in the majority of cases, the school finds that children benefit from starting at the beginning of the school year rather than starting part way through it.

Many parents ask our advice about what they should be doing prior to their child starting school. Here are a few suggested ideas.

  • Encourage children to dress themselves (including shoes) and use the toilet independently.
  • Young children learn through play: spend time with them as they play, listening and watching so that you can add a little extra to what they are already learning.
  • Talk to them a lot - always try to add to their spoken vocabulary.
  • Make sure they can listen carefully and repeat and obey simple instructions.
  • Read to them regularly from well-illustrated books they can enjoy.
  • Ensure they know how much you enjoy books and how useful books are.
  • Sometimes point to the words as you read, showing how we scan from left to right.
  • Let them finish some sentences or predict the outcome of a story.
  • Make up stories for them. Get them to help with ideas. Teach them nursery rhymes and number rhymes.
  • Encourage games that help them recognise similar shapes - snap, happy families, picture lotto, and jigsaw puzzles. Also encourage counting games such as snakes and ladders.
  • Let them help you with jobs, especially 'sorting out and putting in order' jobs like tidying a cupboard or setting a table.
  • Make sure they tidy away their own toys.
  • If they want to learn some letter shapes, make sure they are lower case (small letters) not capitals. Please ask us for a copy of the letter shapes we teach. Tell them the sounds letters make.
  • Let them experience many different materials - paint, play-dough, sand, water, paper, scissors and paste. A painting overall and plenty of newspaper or plastic sheeting for the floor will help you both to enjoy the experience!

Times of the school day
School starts: 8.55 a.m
Morning break: 10.45 -11.00 a.m
Lunchtime: 12.00-1.00 p.m

Lunch and refreshments
Pupils who stay at school for lunch may have a school lunch. Hot meals are brought from Charlbury and have to be ordered in advance. You will be notified of the current price in the school newsletters or at the introductory meeting when your child comes to school for the first time. Parents who receive income support can apply for free meals: a form is available from the office. There is a varied choice of menu including a vegetarian dish and it is possible to cater for some special dietary requirements. Children may bring a packed lunch which is eaten in the hall with the children having school meals (no fizzy drinks, or peanuts please - some children are affected by being near peanuts).

Children who have their lunch at school are not permitted to leave the school grounds unless they bring a note indicating parental authority to do so. Lunchtime supervision is provided by paid lunchtime supervisors under the authority of the headteacher and teacher who share this lunchtime duty.

Parents are asked to send fruit or healthy snacks instead of sweets or biscuits to be eaten at morning break (again, no peanuts please).
